News & Insights 14 January 2015

This update follows reports of a vessel being fired upon at the Libyan Port of Derna on 5 January 2015

This update follows reports of a vessel being fired upon at the Libyan Port of Derna on 5 January 2015.

According to the NATO Shipping Centre, reports indicate that the Libyan Air Force has issued a notice stating that ships approaching the port of Misrata/Misurata will be subject to air strikes from 9 January 2015.

The NATO Shipping Centre advises vessels to avoid travelling through Libyan waters.

Before calling at Misrata/Misurata, owners should contact port and flag state authorities, as well as their local agent, for further information. We suggest that members also notify their hull and machinery underwriters and war risks providers.

Given the uncertain nature of developments in Libya, the club recommends that members trading to the region exercise extreme caution. Members are strongly encouraged to fully comply with ISPS during calls to Libyan ports, as well as maintaining close contact with port and flag state authorities.
