Web Alert: Discharging of damaged food cargo in Lebanon

News & Insights 20 October 2016

Members trading to Lebanon should be aware that the Lebanese Public Health Ministry has recently imposed harsh regulations against all food sectors including cargo entering the country.

Members trading to Lebanon should be aware that the Lebanese Public Health Ministry has recently imposed harsh regulations against all food sectors including cargo entering the country.

The new regulation are resulting in cargo receivers refusing to take delivery of damaged cargo (including wheat) even when they have been guaranteed payment of the destruction costs. The Clubs local correspondents have reported that surrounding countries are also refusing to grant permission to discharge and destroy such cargoes.

This development follows the recent random testing by the Lebanese Health Ministry of wheat imports whereby the Ministry has been searching for unacceptable levels of the carcinogenic substance, chratoxin, which can be harmful.

Should any of the Clubs Members be faced with any difficulties in Lebanon, they should not hesitate to contact the Club or our local correspondents who are highly experienced in these types of matters and can help resolve any disputes in the shortest time possible, and advise on how best to eliminate or reduce delays and costs.
