The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has recently issued a Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) Type Approval Certificate to Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd. After a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type approval, application determined that the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060. This brings the total number of BWMS type approvals by the USCG to 22.

The treatment principle of Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd’s EcoBallast BWMS consists of filtration with UV treatment during uptake and discharge. This approval covers models with maximum treatment rated capacities between 250 m3/h and 2,160 m3/h. EcoBallast’s Type Approval certificate, issued on 7 October 2019, can be viewed here.

The USCG states on the certificate that the EcoBallast BWMS may not be installed on a US-flagged vessel. The BWMS is not intended for installation in hazardous locations on both US and non-US flagged vessels. The BWMS must be marked in accordance with 46 CFR 162.060-22.
