Safety & Loss Advisory Committees

A unique feature of Standard Club, part of North Standard is the ‘safety and loss advisory committees’ (SLACs), which have formed a major part of its loss prevention approach for the last 22 years. The SLAC system was established at the request of the club’s board as a means to bring together senior technical and marine managers from the club’s membership. The members of the committee possess the necessary experience and knowledge to grapple with complex issues and have sufficient authority to enable them to act on the findings within their own organisation.

There are three distinct SLAC divisions: Asia, Europe and London Class. The London Class SLAC focuses on inland waterways’ claims, whilst the Asia and Europe SLACs examine the claims generated by the club’s ‘blue water’ business. All divisions meet twice a year.

The Europe and Asia SLACs examine both individual claims and claims trends as a means to determine the root causes and recommend preventative measures. They also discuss the implications of any new regulations due to come into force, and review loss prevention initiatives and other topical subjects affecting the maritime industry.

The SLACs report directly to the club’s board and aim to analyse individual claims and claim trends with a view to developing prevention strategies and providing direction for the club’s loss prevention initiatives, articles and other activities.
