Sailors' Society Wellness at Sea - Emotional wellness and depression

Seafarer wellbeing has been a focal topic for Standard Club in recent years, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic and we are proud to be working in partnership with Sailors’ Society’s Wellness at Sea programme, sharing helpful advice and resources over a few months.

In this cycle we will be focusing on emotional wellness and mental health, discussing recognising the signs and symptoms of mental illness such as depression and anxiety, and simple things that might help your mental health.

The pandemic has plunged the world into uncertainty, a driving force of strong emotions such as anger, anxiety, stress, and concern. Coupled with extended periods of unfavourable circumstances and environments, mental health issues are exacerbated even further for many of us.

Depression is the leading cause of mental health issues – and recognising the signs is the first step in recovery.

Do I have depression?

In the attachment below are some signs that you can look out for. Paying attention to the frequency of these symptoms can help you know whether to seek professional advice.

This test is not meant to diagnose you, but it serves as a good reference for you to be aware of your mental landscape and articulate why you are feeling the way you do. For further assessment, or to speak to someone, Sailors’ Society has a confidential hotline that you can call +1-938-222-8181.

Stay tuned to this space as more resources from both Standard Club and Sailors’ Society will be shared regularly.
