Initiatives & Projects
We have an active and diverse rolling programme of loss prevention initiatives and projects to target the common root causes of claims.
Our initiatives and projects range from information and research campaigns to interactive videos and digital resources. Most involve external partners, who lend their resources and expertise and also share our commitment to achieving higher standards of safety in the maritime industry.
The club's Safety & Loss Advisory Committees help to drive our initiatives and projects. By analysing individual claims and overall trends, they help to develop strategies and direction for our initiatives and projects.
Supportive documents:

Seafarer Wellbeing
Seafarer wellbeing is essential to safe and efficient shipping. Discover our latest initiatives and guidance to help keep your crews happy.

Human Element
All ships require humans to operate them. Even if drone ships become a reality, they will still be built, maintained and managed by humans.

Spot the Hazard
In 2015, we created a ‘Spot the Hazard’ competition with the International Chamber of Shipping. Open to all serving seafarers, it was designed to promote hazard awareness as a means of reducing the toll of easily preventable accidents.

Cyber Risks
Our loss prevention team continually monitors the growing risk of cyber crime in today’s increasingly digital shipping industry. We share extensive information with our members on what they can and should be doing to protect themselves.

Vehicle Carrier Safety Forum
Together with other maritime insurers and stakeholder, we helped to set up the Vehicle Carrier Safety Forum (VCSF) in 2021. This is an independent, not-for-profit organisation that is for and run by operators of roll-on roll-off ships and pure car/truck carriers.

Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS)
A representative of our loss prevention team attends all meetings of the Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS), an organisation established in 2011 to share information on all cargo-related incidents.

Misdeclared container cargoes
Each year around two million containers packed with dangerous goods are loaded onto ships and carried without special precautions. This is because they have been wrongly declared as non-dangerous − either fraudulently or by mistake.

Stop Work project
The Standard Club, alongside other international partners, is honoured to be part of the Stop Work project, led by Raccoon Games and Quattor P, a safety consultancy and research agency. The project’s aim is to deliver an educational game for seafarers, that will teach its participants in a fun manner the critical importance of stopping work whenever an unforeseen event arises.
How we share knowledge
Much of the knowledge output of our initiatives and projects is in the form of loss prevention publications. These vary from detailed bulletins and guides on specific technical and managerial topics to shorter, more frequent industry handouts.
All publications focus on industry best practices and issues that can or may cause losses and offer suggestions on how best to prevent them. The aim is to provide advice and guidance for members and their crews, as well as to ensure both they and the club have a shared understanding of industry best practice.
