COVID-19 – Air travel requirements for the USA

The US Government has issued a Proclamation on Advancing the Safe Resumption of Global Travel During the Covid-19 Pandemic to advance the resumption of international travel to the United States, provided necessary health and safety protocols are in place to protect against the further introduction, transmission, and spread of Covid-19 into and throughout the United States.

The white house has issued a fact sheet which is available here.

Effective 8 November 2021, all non-immigrant, non-citizen air travelers to the United States will be required to be fully vaccinated and to provide proof of vaccination status prior to boarding the plane to the US.

All travelers will need to follow the below testing requirements:

  • Fully vaccinated: The viral test must be conducted on a sample taken no more than three days before the flight’s departure from a foreign country if you show proof of being fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
  • Not fully vaccinated: The viral test must be conducted on a sample taken no more than one day before the flight’s departure from a foreign country if you do not show proof of being fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Although unvaccinated seafarers, travelling with a C-1 and D non-immigrant visa are exempted from these conditions, however, they will have to comply with the following requirements:

  1. You will be tested with a Covid-19 viral test 3-5 days after arrival in the United States, unless you have documentation of having recovered from Covid-19 in the past 90 days;
  2. You will self-quarantine for a full seven days, even if the test result to the post-arrival viral test is negative, unless you have documentation of having recovered from Covid-19 in the past 90 days; and
  3. You will self-isolate if the result of the post-arrival test is positive or if you develop Covid-19 symptoms.
