Despite the many advances in technology, navigational incidents are unfortunately a regular and recurring theme in the shipping industry.
The shipping fraternity & their marine insurers has seen an increasing trend in the frequency and severity of navigation related incidents,  and have suffered huge financial losses as a consequence. The root cause analysis of  such incidents, inevitably boils down to issues such as human behaviour, lack of teamwork, poor communication, poor intervention & challenge, and the lack of a common vision.

To address these issues and to discuss potential solutions, Standard Club has worked closely with the UK Chamber of Shipping as part of a BRM Task Force  along with numerous stakeholders representing the wider shipping industry.

Through rigorous discussions over many sessions this ‘Bridge Resource Management Guidance’ has been produced by the BRM Task Force and the UK Chamber of Shipping. The guidance complements the work already available by filling gaps in understanding and current procedures. It is not “best practice”, but seeks to standardise BRM principles, define roles and responsibilities and develop the navigator/co-navigator concept.

Standard Club hopes that the newer BRM concepts discussed in the publication would make a positive impact within the Shipping Industry, minimising the number of navigation related losses in the longer term.

To launch the publication, a live webinar will take place on Monday 14 December 2020. Find out more and register here.
