News: Legislative developments in Egypt

News & Insights 7 October 2019

In an attempt to speed up the litigation process for certain commercial disputes, Egypt has assigned Maritime Claims to the Economic Courts.

From 1 October 2019, new lawsuits and those currently pending before the commercial courts of the first instance will be referred to the Economic Courts. Among the key differences between the previously applicable litigation process and the new system is that court decisions for lawsuits below EGP 500,000 (approximately USD 30,598 on the basis of today’s exchange rate) will not be appealable. From the time the lawsuits are filed until the time they are discussed in front of the competent court (30 days), the Preparation and Mediation Department of the Economic Court will review the file and invite the parties to mediate in order to attempt an amicable settlement. Eldib PandI, our correspondent lawyers in Egypt, emphasise the importance of submitting all supporting documents as soon as the lawsuit or the defence is filed in order to avoid unnecessary delays and unfavorable, non-appealable judgements.

You can find in the attachment on the right the update we received from Eldib PandI regarding the recent legislative developments in Egypt.
