The Maritime Labour Convention 2006, has been ratified by Turkey, as declared in the Official Gazette numbered 30018 dated 25 March 2017.
The Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC), has been ratified by Turkey, as declared in the Official Gazette numbered 30018 dated 25 March 2017.
As has been previously reported on numerous occasions the MLC contains general provisions regarding the employment of seafarers and establishes minimum standards for working and living conditions for all seafarers employed on ships flying the flags of contracting states. The MLC will also apply to ships which call at ports in contracting states.
Contracting states are obliged to inspect and certify the compliance of ships with these minimum standards. Any violation of these standards will result in penalties being incurred.
It should be noted that the MLC has been binding on Turkish owned ships flying a flag of a contracting state even before Turkey ratified the Convention.
Turkey’s ratification brings it in line with many other jurisdictions around the world with regards to standards for the employment of seafarers.
The ratification will be registered by the International Labour Organisation and will gain full force and effect for Turkish flagged vessels 12 months after registration.
