Web Alert: Claim handling tips for crewmember tuberculosis cases in the United States

Over the past few years, the club has seen an increase in the number of tuberculosis (TB) cases in crewmembers around the world, especially in crewmembers travelling to the United States. These cases can be particularly difficult to handle and can be very costly for shipowners if the crewmember is diagnosed while in a US hospital.

Members should note that the club will provide cover for both the expenses associated with the medical treatment and repatriation of a crewmember with TB and for quarantine expenses, subject to limited exceptions.

Under Rule 3.12, quarantine expenses are recoverable if incurred because of the outbreak of an infectious disease on board, including TB. Cover extends to the member’s net expenses, ie those expenses remaining after deductions for the costs which would have been incurred by the vessel anyway, despite the quarantine. The costs and expenses usually contemplated are bunkers, insurance, wages, stores, provisions, and port charges that are incurred as the result of quarantine.
