Web alert: Piracy - an ongoing need for vigilance
News & Insights 1 September 2014
Despite an improvement in the overall piracy situation off Somalia and in the wider Indian Ocean, the threat remains.
Despite an improvement in the overall piracy situation off Somalia and in the wider Indian Ocean, the threat remains and shipowners should continue to be vigilant. In its most recent “Command Overview”, UKMTO reported a concentration of activity in two areas: Bab El Mandeb and the Gulf of Oman, with the sighting of more weapons and ladders than in any other month so far this year. It is thought the easing of the south west monsoon is playing a part in increased small boat activity, with reports of skiffs coming close to merchant vessels.
