The explosions at China's Tianjin Port on 12 August brought home the fatal consequences of improperly storing dangerous cargo. But while the scale of the loss of life and the supply chain disruption emanating from the disaster was unprecedented, it was far from an isolated incident, with the shipping industry facing a growing problem of ship fires resulting from dangerous cargoes exploding.
