The infrastructure in place at the port leads officials to believe it can offer significant vessel recycling opportunities.

It is anticipated that the port of Genoa, which is currently dismantling the wreck of the cruise ship Costa Concordia, is to become a European ship recycling centre. 

The port site and facilities comply with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention) and the European Regulation on Ship Recycling.
