Web alert: new requirements for club LoUs in Mexico

News & Insights 16 April 2015

A new requirement under the Mexican Navigation Law establishes that club letters of undertaking (LoUs) will only be accepted in Mexico when that club has been officially recognised by the Maritime Authority.

A new requirement under the Mexican Navigation Law establishes that club letters of undertaking (LoUs) will only be accepted in Mexico when that club has been officially recognised by the Maritime Authority. The authority will also seek confirmation that the club will submit to the Mexican jurisdiction for LoUs issued in favour of Mexican government entities –i.e. state companies, port and harbour authorities.

The new legislation was enacted on 27 February 2015 and entered into force on 27 March 2015. It aims to facilitate the acceptance of club LoUs and encourage prompt release of vessels.

The Standard Club Europe has already submitted the request to the Director General of the Merchant Marina (see attachment) to comply with the registration process.
