CHIRP (Confidential Hazardous Incident Reporting Program) has cooperated with the ‘Arts & Sciences and Neuroscience Departments’ at University College London to develop guidance for seafarers and maritime operators regarding the correlation between vision and perception. This publication identifies five limitations which can affect a seafarer's vision:

1. Lighting
2. Attention
3. Size and distance
4. What and where
5. Adaption

The book also makes important connections between ship design and the human element.
