Web Alert: Cyclone Veronica

News & Insights 25 March 2019

Cyclone Veronica has crippled activity around the three major ports in the world’s most important iron ore exporting region, the Pilbara.

Cyclone Veronica has crippled activity around the three major ports in the world’s most important iron ore exporting region, the Pilbara. The ports of Ashburton, Dampier and Port Hedland ceased all operations on Friday 22 March 2019 and remain closed. The Pilbara Ports Authority is uncertain when it will reopen its facilities. They have been closed for 3 days at this point.

BHP said in a statement initial inspections had shown water damage to some buildings at its Nelson Point rail and port facilities in Port Hedland. It said it was “currently working through this situation”, which could impact on employees returning to work. Rio Tinto is still reviewing the impact of the cyclone on its facilities at Dampier and will make a decision on reopening certain facilities in the next 24 hours.

Members are advised to take “all necessary precautions” and follow the extreme weather plans for the affected ports.

The Strike Club’s dedicated risk map will continue to be updated with information on the risk environment as it develops.
