News & Insights 29 September 2019

Greek news outlet Ethnos spoke to Eleni Antoniadou, Offshore Claims Executive, about her career prior to joining The Standard Club, including working for the UN.

After studying Law in Athens followed by two Masters degrees, the latter of which she specialised in International Law of the Sea, Eleni joined the UN family for the first time doing her internship at the International Maritime Organization (IMO). She later moved to IMCA, an NGO with representation in the IMO, and made speeches at the UN and in Brussels as an IMCA spokeswoman.

In 2018 she worked as a Legal Officer for the IMO, continuing her vision to help and look for ways to make shipping part of the solution to tackle climate change.

Eleni is optimistic that shipping is moving in the right direction in regards to environmental protection and the fight against climate change. She says, 'The first thing to say is that ships carry about 90% of the world's freight, but greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping in 2012 accounted for about 2.2% of global carbon dioxide emissions. Shipping is one of the misunderstood areas. But very serious steps have been taken in the right direction.'
