The Human Element is known to be a major cause of incidents on board ships. This is despite the crew having the necessary regulatory training and certification to be considered competent.

In an article for safety4sea, Yves Vandenborn, Director of Loss Prevention, argues that building resilience amongst crew is vital for improving safety on board ships. He also explores the different types of training and assessment that could improve crew resilience, so that the human element ceases to cause incidents but in fact saves the ship.
