The club has previously reported in a news item about the increased piracy and kidnap threat in the Gulf of Guinea. Since the start of 2021 there have been several reported attacks. The latest attack method by armed individuals includes using a previously attacked fishing vessel Lian Peng Yu 809 as a mother vessel from where smaller boats are launched to approach larger vessels.

As a result of the recent spate of incidents, the local authorities in Gabon have until further notice raised the ISPS Security Level for Gabonese waters and ports from MARSEC Level 1 to MARSEC Level 2. A copy of the notice issued by the Director of the Merchant Marine can be found on the right.

Members who may transit high risk areas are strongly encouraged to comply fully with all the recommended best management practice planning, voyage and reporting procedures. If transiting Gabonese waters, it is advised to closely monitor VHF as the Gabonese Navy might call with instructions when approaching Gabonese waters.

The club would like to thank our correspondents Eltvedt & O'Sullivan and TCI AFRICA (Gabon) for the information.
