The Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) Quarter 1 2021 results have been released and the findings reflect the seafarer conditions amidst a backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic.

With delays in crew changes, seafarers are now forced to stay onboard for a longer period than expected. This seems to be translating into frayed nerves and undercurrent tensions which are proving to be a test of social interactions amongst crew. Oppression, bullying and intimidation were mentioned by respondents in the SHI Q1 2021 survey.

It is inevitable for differences to arise when people from various religions, cultures and nationalities come together. However, the line is crossed when it escalates into harassment, resentment and even racism.

The club has resources on seafarer social wellbeing but the bulk of the responsibility falls on the shoulders of owners/companies to come up with active steps to reduce tensions onboard between nationalities and to promote a celebration and culture of diversity and inclusiveness.

The Standard Club is a proud sponsor of the Seafarers Happiness Index, a report by Mission to Seafarers.
