BIMCO has warned shipping organisations to be on their guard when conducting operations at the port of Lagos Nigeria. Reports have emerged of unjustified fines being levied against ships in connection with immigration controls. The fines were issued in reponse to allegations of non-compliance with crew employment contracts. In addition to the fines, demands were made for various consumer goods, and threats were made to detain the ship in the event of a failure to comply.
