Web Alert: Expansion of The Standard Club PEME Scheme
22 March 2017
The Standard Club is happy to report that its Pre-Employment Medical Examination (PEME) scheme has now entered its second year. The decision to continue the scheme was based on its successful first year of operation: the scheme examined over 2,000 seafarers in 2016, and the monthly rate of examinations and the number of members using the scheme continue to grow.
The scheme has distributed health advice to many seafarers with treatable conditions ensuring that these conditions do not worsen and result in a claim. The scheme also identified seafarers who were chronically ill and thus unfit for sea service. It is likely that some of those unfit seafarers would have resulted in a claim against our member during their sea service. The high costs associated with repatriations means that the prevention of only a few such incidents justifies the cost of running the scheme.
The scheme has been expanded with the addition of four more clinics based in the Philippines. These clinics were subjected to a rigorous audit by our partners Medical Rescue International (MRI) and operate to a proven high standard. It is hoped that the addition of these clinics will provide much needed additional capacity for the scheme and increase the ease of access for members. These clinics will be available to perform Standard Club PEME examinations from 1 April 2017. Members should regularly check our website for the most up to date list of accredited clinics to ensure that they only use clinics which have been audited and are working at the high standards demanded by our scheme.
