Web Alert: The Standard Club backs new cyber security awareness efforts
09 November 2016
The Standard Club is happy to announce its support for a new initiative aimed at improving the awareness amongst seafarers of cyber security. This area of risk, whilst not new in the world in general, is a novel one for the maritime industry. Ships have never been so complex and dependent on technology as they are today. It remains to be seen what further risks will be exposed as hackers/hacktavists become more aware of the potential of mounting attacks on shipping and/or maritime infrastructure. In such a climate the new ‘Be Cyber Aware at Sea’ initiative is a welcome step in the right direction, toward a safer more secure industry.
The Standard Club believes that one of the most important components in the fight to prevent cyber crime at sea is the awareness and knowledge of the seafarers who man the ships and facilities which may be subject to threat. ‘Be Cyber Aware at Sea’ has been launched by JWC International and includes an industry messaging initiative comprising of posters, short educational films and guidance booklets for seagoing staff. It is the hope of the club that these efforts will equip seafarers with the skills to play their vital role in the fight against cyber-crime at sea.
