Web Alert: Expansion of The Standard Club’s PEME scheme
Since its creation in September 2015, the club’s pre-employment medical examination (PEME) scheme has conducted over 12,500 examinations on behalf of club members. The expansion in number of clinics and locations will allow more examinations to take place.

Web Alert: 'FONAR' systems in view of the 2020 sulphur regulations
The IMO has attempted to reduce airborne emissions from ships through Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention, which first came into force in 2005. This includes a global limit for the sulphur content of ship’s fuel oil, as well as more stringent controls within designated ‘Emission Control Areas’ (ECAs).

The shipping industry is the primary cause of anthropogenic sound but at present international laws and guidelines do little to negate this. This begs the question whether anything more stringent will be introduced and, if so, what effect this may have on cover and costs to members/other parties in the industry.

While navigators might assume that the accuracy of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) is certain, this is not always the case, and many navigators are placing too much faith in the information that their ECDIS displays. For safe navigation, a mariner must also consider the accuracy and reliability of the source hydrographic data.
