Setting the standard for service and security

Risk management and loss prevention

The Club places great emphasis on risk management and on safety and loss prevention. The club also focuses on quality control and selective underwriting.

Risk Management

  • On entry into the Club, ships that are more than 12 years of age are surveyed as a condition of cover.
  • Ships already entered are surveyed routinely.
  • Surveys are also arranged after a review of claims that have occurred on a particular ship or by a particular member.
  • To be a member of the Standard Club, shipowners are required to comply with the Club's ‘Minimum Operating Standards’, which include procedures for safety management and are designed to help develop a safety culture.

Loss Prevention

  • Major claims are reviewed by the Club's Safety and Loss Advisory Committee, a committee that comprises senior operations personnel from a variety of members.
  • Lessons that can be learnt from those claims are published to all Club members
  • Education of ships' senior officers in P&I matters, loss prevention and claims-handling.
  • A series of guides for masters.
  • Seminars on a wide range of loss prevention topics.
  • Publications on specific safety and loss prevention issues.
