The Club places great emphasis on risk management and on safety and loss prevention. The club also focuses on quality control and selective underwriting.
Risk Management
- On entry into the Club, ships that are more than 12 years of age are surveyed as a condition of cover.
- Ships already entered are surveyed routinely.
- Surveys are also arranged after a review of claims that have occurred on a particular ship or by a particular member.
- To be a member of the Standard Club, shipowners are required to comply with the Club's ‘Minimum Operating Standards’, which include procedures for safety management and are designed to help develop a safety culture.
Loss Prevention
- Major claims are reviewed by the Club's Safety and Loss Advisory Committee, a committee that comprises senior operations personnel from a variety of members.
- Lessons that can be learnt from those claims are published to all Club members
- Education of ships' senior officers in P&I matters, loss prevention and claims-handling.
- A series of guides for masters.
- Seminars on a wide range of loss prevention topics.
- Publications on specific safety and loss prevention issues.
